Generation XXL – Channel 4

This is a review of the episode featuring the younger children. We have Libby, Lucas and Kelsey aged 7 and Bethany aged 6. Anyone who watched the programme cannot help but be distressed at seeing children look like these youngsters. Under 10′s should be running round with dirt on their knees and runny noses – [...]

… but the lunch won’t be the problem. A study done by Carnegie Weight Management (fat camp for kids, basically) found that an average Christmas dinner can contain 956 calories and48g of fat. Who cares?! Turkey, carrots, sprouts, parsnips, even roast potatoes and a bit of stuffing are not going to do anyone any harm. [...]

Childhood Obesity “Levelling off”

Written by Zoë on November 3, 2009 - 0 Comments
Categories: Media comments, Obesity

This was on lots of news channels – I caught Tam Fry (National Obesity Forum) talking about it on BBC Breakfast and then someone (didn’t catch his name) on Radio 4′s Today Programme. There were press articles all over the place – most very misleading. The “Independent” headline was “Childhood Obesity ‘has peaked’ “, and [...]

School’s out and we’re off to FAT CAMP

Written by Zoë on July 18, 2009 - 0 Comments
Categories: Dieting, Media comments

I wanted to cry at the end of this article. It is all about obese teenagers who are spending this summer at fat camps in the UK (such camps have been around in the US for years). The reason I wanted to cry is because the advice that they are being given in the camp [...]

Obese mothers ‘at ten times the risk of having obese daughters’

Written by Zoë on July 14, 2009 - 0 Comments
Categories: Media comments, Obesity

This story was widely reported everywhere on Tuesday – I woke up to see the story on BBC Breakfast news. The study was conducted in Plymouth and the findings were published in the International Journal of obesity. 226 families were studied, which some other researchers have cautioned is a small number. The key conclusions were: [...]

Letting fat children eat junk food is child abuse

Written by Zoë on July 11, 2009 - 0 Comments

This was a brilliant lead column by Amanda Platell in the Daily Mail in response to the Jamie Oliver initiative on school meals (see the blog “Jamie’s school meal revolution shunned by 400,000 pupils”). In great Amanda style – say it how it is – Amanda argues that Jamie’s plan required the support of all [...]

Jamie’s school meal revolution shunned by 400,000 pupils

When you look at this Daily Mail article, alongside the blog about obese mothers and fathers being 10 and 6 times more likely, respectively, to have obese daughters and sons, this article makes you want to scream! Ministers set aside £500m to help with this project – quite rightly – as the evidence that an [...]

Where one child in six is obese before they start school

Written by Zoë on July 6, 2009 - 0 Comments
Categories: Media comments, Obesity

This was a shocking article in the Daily Mail, by David Derbyshire, about childhood obesity. Overall, 1 child in 10 is obese by the age of 5, while 1 in 5 is obese when they start secondary school. The regional differences are even more striking: In Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, 1 in 6 is obese when they [...]

Blame the junk food – Bad diet, not lack of exercise, is behind child obesity crisis

Written by Zoë on March 14, 2007 - 0 Comments
Categories: Dieting, Exercise, Media comments

A verbatim extract from the article: “Poor nutrition is the cause of obesity in children, not lack of physical exercise, a scientist claimed yesterday. Professor Terrence Wilkin said the crisis was being caused by larger portion sizes of unhealthy foods. His research undermines the government’s strategy to cut child obesity by focusing on more sports [...]
