This week we’re looking at a classic article, which was published in January 2013. It was called “Low-Carbohydrate Diets and All-Cause Mortality: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies” and it was written by a Japanese team with Hiroshi Noto as the first author (Ref 1).

I was reminded of this article when Dr Peter Brukner emailed me a poster that was presented at a conference in August 2018 (Ref 2). The poster was called “Low carbohydrate diets and all cause and cause specific mortality: a population based cohort study and pooling prospective studies” and it was presented by researchers from Sweden, Greece, England and Poland. The lead author was Mohsen Mazidi. There are very few studies in the Noto paper, and I happened to notice that the same few studies were being used by Mazidi et al. I also recalled that these same few studies came up in the headline grabbing Seidelmann et al article, also from August 2018, which was called “Dietary carbohydrate intake and mortality: a prospective cohort study and meta-analysis” (Ref 3).

It makes sense to look at these three papers together, therefore, to see which studies they have in common, which are different and how they have come to their conclusions. Let’s start with the first article by Noto et al
