Good on you Zoe! As a mum, seeing the ads for appalling foods that pop up endlessly on children’s telly maddens me beyond belief. Official dietary advice does feel like one huge, smug, la la la conspiracy of ignorance and the fact that their way patently isnt working, doesnt slow them down for an instant. The Food Standards Agency which is meant to be independent and working in *our* interests, is worse than useless in protecting the population from the vested interests that seem to direct what we eat. You must feel like a voice howling in the wilderness!

ANYWAY – the reason Im writing – I had a couple of questions.:-p Im not sure if its still permissible to ask them here but I thought I’d give it a try at least, since I couldnt find the answers anywhere in the FAQs. I’m trying to control candida.

1 Is it OK to drink white tea and green tea in Phase 1 though I believe the contain small amounts of caffeine? And 2. is sweetcure (unsmoked) bacon ok in phase 1 as well? Thanks so much. x

Hi Annie – thanks for your support! I think netmums and similar groups have way more power than they realise and more than target companies would like and these groups are going to make the difference for the children of the future. Someone needs to, because it isn’t going to be the FSA (with the member of Unilever on the board)!

On the tea – decaf is always better. Caffeine will stimulate a response in the body and the difference it makes will be different for each person. If you find caffeine doesn’t send you on energy highs and lows and stimulate cravings then you may get away with it. For me it’s a cheat not worth having but for some people it definitely is! See the end of the Phase 2 chapter for more on this.

On the bacon – as soon as you see the word sweet, run a mile! The lovebacon info site describes sweet cured bacon as

“Sugars of varying kinds, such as Muscavado, Demerara or Molasses are the dominant feature of Sweet Cure bacon. Spices such as juniper are also sometimes added for extra flavour. The curing process follows the same key principles as for the basic dry or wet cure, but the addition of sugar as the leading feature of the cure results in mouthwatering, moreish bacon with a flavoursome aroma and smoky, syrupy notes.”
The plainer the bacon you can get (literally slices off a pig from the local butcher!) the better. A cheat deffo not worth having!
    Best wishes – Zoe

Way to go Zoe! As a mum of 2, I am constantly trying to protect my children from the lure of sugary snacks and sweets.
Walking down the cereal aisle in the supermarket is a headache with my 4 year old picking up every packet that looks fun – which inevitably are sugary cereals covered in attractive cartoon images. You are right – it is no wonder our nation is getter fatter.

I have had to become canny to minimize the sugary snacks my children eat. I only do online shopping and the local grocers now so that they have no choice (they don’t want what they can’t see) and I try to fill them up at meal times so that they are not hungry in between.
I also make sure that they watch only BBC channels so that they are not bombarded with adverts. I know this will be more difficult as they get older – but I will make this last as long as I can!

So thank you Zoe for standing up for mums like me everywhere!
