BBC Radio Manchester Interview

This was recorded live on 29 December 2009. BBC Manchester very kindly worked with BBC Radio Wales so that I could do the interview from there. BBC Wales was like a ghost town – the coffee shop was closed and I was the only person in the canteen. Gwilym from security set me up in the ‘studio’. I was in something akin to a broom cupboard on the ground floor at BBC Wales and left alone with ISDN technology and a set of headphones. Don’t they know I can’t work the TV recorder?! Luckily Emma from Manchester called me and it all worked really well. Becky Want was the radio presenter – many thanks for having me Becky! Gwilym got a book for his help and he said his missus would be very pleased.
p.s. – if you hear some fumbled laughing at some point in the interview I said that people wanted to be slim more than they wanted to sleep with David Beckham. It sounds like they edited that bit out, but, in fact, Andy dropped the phone and missed recording that bit. I thought that would go down well in Manchester!

Hello Zoe,
I have been following this way of eating for 13 weeks now….but for some reason I just cannot lose weight.I lost 4lb in phase 1 and thats been it. Most of my meals are “fat” 3 mornings a week I have steel cut oats with skimmed milk..the other mornings I eat 3 egg omlette with 50g of french feta cheese. I am 43, 5ft 7′-75.8kg(want to weigh 65kg)Past 5yrs have been battling to lose wt(103kg april 2004) Was counting cals until I stumbled on your book…As you can see I lose wt very slowly.I workout out 5-6 days a week.
I enjoyed listening to your interview (M/cr is my home city…been living in Saudi for 21 yrs..nice to hear a mancunian!!) The one thing that I am confused with is from what I understand after reading your book is its ok to eat “healthy” carbs just separate from “fats” but your interview seems to suggest to drastically reduce carbs even the healthy ones…so which is it???
I thoroughly enjoy your book, and refer back to it often.. But dont understand why I’m not losing on it.
Thank you Zoe

Hi Sue – I think you’re the most far away listener so far! I’m sorry to hear your weight loss has been unusually slow. You are only just into the overweight category at the moment, but your goal is a healthy one – so there shouldn’t be a problem reaching this.
You are right – it is OK to eat healthy carbs, separate from fats. It’s impossible to get a 400 page book across in a 5 min interview!
Have you tried keeping a food diary so that you really do know everything you eat? One of the most difficult groups to help lose weight are people who work out a lot! The body will demand food before, during and/or after workouts and people often go one of two ways: 1) they get such low blood sugar that they give in to carb cravings around exercise time and eat more carbs than they realise or 2) they don’t eat enough and the body gets used to storing fat ready for the fuel needed for exercise. One of my best friends has just done an “Iron Man” (2.4 mile swim, 100 mile bike ride and then run a marathon!) and she eats fewer calories than I do and she carries reserves (fat) around her middle as a result. I have had a couple of clients reduce their exercise to a more moderate level and lose weight well!
I do offer phone consultations if you need more help!
Best wishes – Zoe
Hello Zoe,
Thank you for your prompt reply. My kitchen is full of these little note books which I use for my food diaries!! With me only eating 3x a day I can really keep track with all the food I am eating.
You mentioned that your very sporty friend ate less calories than you….I counted cals for a week a few weeks ago and I was taking in 1800-2000….do you think I should eat some more?
Having suffered with anxiety and depression for quite a long time I find the hr long exercise most mornings an alternative to taking medication. I tell myself I’ll not exercise today but I become anxious and out of sorts until I give in and do it!!
and if I dont exercise I feel like a failure and have gained weight…silly I know. Maybe for the new yr I should try and reduce my exercise 3-5 days a week and see if theres a positive change in my weight…I’ll have to do some extra housework on the days I dont workout!!
I really feel that I am eating per plan..maybe not enough or too much or the exercising has something to do with it. (I’ll eventually figure it out)
I want to continue with this way of eating..
Many, many thanks Zoe

Zoe,I have just listened to your interview and read your book.I am 3 days into Phase 1 and have a headache as expected! I totally believe in your diet as a lot of my bloating and water retention are due to carbs and starches. I am wheat intolerant and sensitive to dairy. If I have milk it is usually soya. I have only seen one referance to soya milk in your book. Please would you give me your opinion on the use of soya products instead of dairy and when to use them. Many thanks for explaining the reason why many of us have such problems with our weight. Golda
Hi Golda – check out the 4th most FAQ – it’s on soya milk: http://theharcombediet.com/faqs/top-5-faqs/
Keep attacking that Candida!
Very best wishes – Zoe
