Activia vs Natural (Live) Yoghurt
The ingredients in Activia ‘natural’ yoghurt are low fat yoghurt with Bifidus ActiRegularis (Registered Trademark) (skimmed milk, skimmed milk powder, cream, milk proteins, yoghurt cultures).
The ingredients in the fat free range of Activia (taking the top entry on the web site – blueberry – as an example) are: fat free yoghurt with Bifidus ActiRegularis (Registered Trademark) (this time only “skimmed milk, skimmed milk powder, yoghurt cultures” are declared); blueberry (5.4%); blackcurrant; fibre (oligofructose); stabilisers (modified maize starch, guar gum, xanthan gum); acidity regulators (sodium citrate, calcium citrate, citric acid); flavouring; colour (grape juice concentrate); sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame K). The other varieties all look pretty similar in terms of ingredients.
The ingredients in Natural (Live) Yoghurt are: yoghurt!
Ideally have just plain NLY from a supermarket own brand or from a health food shop. If you must have Activia, go for the ‘natural’ option – which has more processing than is necessary, but could be worse. Don’t go near the fat free/fruit options, if you are trying to follow The Harcombe Diet.
p.s. Bifidus ActiRegularis – puh-lease?! Did some marketing people sit down and try to make a manufactured ingredient, to stick in yoghurt, sound like Latin for something that will imply active regular bowel movements?!

This is a free eBook for you to enjoy and to share freely with friends and colleagues.
I eat only GREEK yogurt — active cultures, milk.
These other yogurts are just “deserts” — with fructose, UGH and other ingredients
that are very bad for you. Never eat anything with more than 3 or 4 ingredients.
AVOID FRUCTOSE and PALM OIL. I have been eating yogurt for nearly 50 years
and am very healthy and slim.
findinf hard to get nly does any one know anything about yogurt makers and are they any good thanks
please help!!!! i have ordered your book and still waiting but started from all the rules i have managed to get online since 5 days doing the attack. i am in hell right now, i have tried and tried to find NLY a total nightmare to find in france by the way!!! i had one supermarket make of natural yogurt with bifidus, i went for it because it has milk and bifidus so i figured that was ok, then today i changed brand same ingrediants but i have cravings for suger really badly!!! does anyone know of a brand that makes it here in the south of france or what i can do to make it myself….i have lost 5lbs but expected more as i am holding huge amounts of water and my body is a mess after 4operations in 5months, you cazn only imagine!! please please help me Zoe, by the way i think your fab!!
Hi there – poor you! This is why it’s best not to start until you have the book, as you have worked out that you need to know why the cravings get worse before they get better. You also need to know about the 3 conditions to understand what’s going on. You don’t need to get NLY – it’s just a nice part of the diet if you can get it. Natural yoghurt with bifidus sounds fine – you just don’t want anything with sugar or dextrose etc.
We have a help club as well – I rarely get time to check the blogs – you just got lucky tonight! We’re at http://www.theharcombedietclub.com and lovely people can help support you through this
Best wishes – Zoe
Hi Zoë, Just wondering if the Eridanous “Greek Style” creamy yoghurt from Lidl is NLY. In English the ingredients are just listed as “Creamy Yoghurt”. I did translate the Finnish ingredients “mjolk, gradde, mjolkprotein, yoghurtkultur” – “milk, cream, milkprotein, yoghurt culture”. I Hope it is NLY as it should be widely available, comes in 1L tubs and is very nice!! I got the book earlier in the week and am about to start on phase one!
I just looked online for NLY and came up mostly with Activa from Stonyfield. Wonder if my
store has it. The plain should be all right. I went shopping today, but wasn’t sure
what I was looking for.
